Actual choice depends on the version of Sentinel RMS License Manager you run. Specifics are:

Version 10.1:Will be required for SIM Suite 7.6 onwards. Compatible with older SIM Suite versions. Recommended version. Requires Windows 10 or 11, or Server 2016, 2019 or 2022. See Sentinel release notes. Upgrade by simply running the installer.
Version 9.6:Will be required for SIM Suite 7.0 SP2 and 7.1 onwards. Compatible with older SIM Suite versions. Requires Windows 7 though 10, or Server 2008 through 2019. Upgrade by simply running the installer.
Version 8.6.1:Will be used in SIM Suite 6.2 service pack 3 and 7.0.
Version 8.6 (ships with SIM Suite 6.2 onward):Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows Server 2008, 2012 and 2012 R2. While not officially supported, seems to work fine under Windows 10, 64 bit.

Sentinel RMS License Manager is fully backwards-compatible and you may upgrade to a more recent version to suit your needs. In other words you can always use the most recent version available regardless of your KBC software program version, allowing you to keep up with server operating system upgrades.

You can generally use an older network license server version with a newer SIM Suite version, to some extent (e.g. SIM Suite 6.1 with version 8.3 of the licence server, but not 8.1). We recommend however that you upgrade at your earliest convenience.

The server can be a virtual machine (such as VMWare or Virtual Box). Under Windows terminal server it is also possible to run the license server. Support for running the license server under Citrix is not known, and not generally done.

The KBC implementation of Sentinel technology does nothing to hinder it being used with multiple vendors on the same server. Other vendors may not do the same.

Supporting Tools:

Redundant license servers require their own additional set of licenses. Locking information for both machines are needed.

The Sentinel RMS License Manager uses port 5093 to transfer data over UDP or TCP between Servers and clients.

Port 5099 TFTP (UDP) is also used for intercommunication between servers only in a Server Redundancy constellation (which is rare and require special setup).

Windows Server and Server CoreSIM Suite 7.0 was tested on Windows Server 2016 and 2012 and works fine. SIM Suite 7.1 and upwards are supported against Server 2016 and Server 2019. SIM Suite 7.4 and upwards are tested against Win Server 2022 and 2025. Multiflash 7.4 was still tested against 2019 and Multiflash 7.5 started testing against 2022. Maximus 7.4 and Sim Suite 7.4 had a 2022 configuration tested. Note that standalone licenses are disabled on Windows server platforms, but network licenses can be used.

64-bit Windows is recommended, since it offers improved performance and memory support.

SIM Suite 7.4 on upwards is 64 bit only and requires 64 bit windows. SIM Suite 7.3 was the last version to offer 32 bit support.

Maximus does not support Vista or XP. FloWax 2.0 does not support Vista or XP

SIM Suite can be run on a virtualized environment such as VMWare, Virtual Box or Hyper-V using a stand alone or network license. When using terminal servers (such as Windows terminal server or Cirtrix) that allow multi user multi logins, a network license is required and a stand alone license can not be used.

Standalone licenses support many application instances. For network licenses, the license Sharing Limit setting determines how many instances can be run (Seats can be added if a Sharing Limit higher than five is needed).

Petro-SIM supports running on non-English operating systems. Japanese and Mandarin versions are tested. Petro-SIM generally supports native language names and characters. German and Spanish also work but are not routinely tested.

Combinations tested (and thus also supported) are shown below. Testing is no longer done on Windows 7 but it may still be supported. We recommended the most up to date version of Windows and test on those.

For clients that need to use a Click-to-Run version of Office prior to the release of these versions, we have made available a short term workaround. Note that Office 365 and Office 2019 are only available as Click-to-Run installations. For other versions, please follow the instructions on this page to determine if you have the Click-to-Run or MSI installation.

Database Support:

  • SQLite support is built-in and an ODBC driver is also installed.

    • SQL Server 2022 (with data compression) is recommended
    • Express editions are not recommended due to size limitations
    • Client drivers are not installed with SIM Suite
  • PostgreSQL 13 and upwards
    • Client drivers are not installed with SIM Suite, psqlODBC is recommended
  • Generic ODBC connections are supported in Petro-SIM only, allowing connections to MariaDB or MySQL


.NET Framework:

  • SIM Suite 7.1 and upwards install .NET Framework 4.7.2.
  • Maximus 7.1 & FloWax 2.2 and upwards require .NET Framework 4.7.2 (will be installed if needed)
  • Maximus 6.16 and upwards require .NET 4.5.2 Framework
  • Maximus 6.15 and older require .NET 3.5 Framework
  • FloWax 2.0 requires .NET 4.5.2 Framework


Flaretot:

  • Version 1.6 was tested on Windows 10, Windows 11 and WinServer2022.
  • Version 1.4.9.0 was tested on Petro-SIM version 7.1.
  • Version 1.3 was tested. Version 1.4.6.0 is supported on Petro-SIM version 7.0.


PIPESIM:

  • Version 2012.3 (32-bit) is tested. Only the classic version was supported until Petro-SIM 7.6. May exhibit some issues around 64 bit Petro-SIM versions.
  • Pipesim 2025.1 onwards are supported in Petro-SIM 7.7 and onwards.


HCAMS: Version 2019 August through 2022 tested. We recommend that clients obtain the latest version from Haverly.
HTRI:
We generally recommend the latest version as some issues are found and fixed. Version 9.3, 9.2, 9.1, 9.0, 8.1, 8.0.1 and 7.3.1 are known to work. Version 7.2 was also used extensively.

OmegaLand:
Versions 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3, 3.2.2, 3.1.2 and 2.7.1 are known to work. We recommend 64 bit Omegaland and 64 bit Petro-SIM.

General Petro-SIM help is installed locally and also available online. Reactor technology manuals are available online only and require internet access.


1 KBC recommends 64-bit operating systems, commonly found in all new systems. Such systems perform slightly better, and 32-bit software also gets access to more memory. Internally most KBC systems use Windows 11 64-bit (formerly Windows 10 64-bit). 64-bit Petro-SIM can be used and installed alongside 32-bit Petro-SIM, but requires a 64 bit operating system. 2 Petro-SIM 6.0 and upward are not tested on Windows XP as Microsoft no longer supports this platform. Petro-SIM may work without issue on Windows XP, but KBC does not guarantee that incompatibilities will not arise at a future point. With newer versions, incompatibilities or installation challenges should be expected.

Other notes:

  • SIM Suite can be installed silently and automatically rolled out through an organization. We generally provide standard MSI installation packages.
  • IPv6 Address support: all recent versions of SIM Suite from Petro-SIM 6.1 and Sentinel RMS 8.3.0 upwards should support IPv6 as well as IPv4.
